New In School

Gently, I placed my hand on the door and took a deep breathe. I walked through the doors of my next 3 years, scared to death. My heart was pounding harder then ever, as all the eyes in the front lobby turned to look at me.

Was there something wrong with my outfit, or something on my face. It occurred to me right then and there, that I would have to get use to the silent stares. Because being the new girl wasn't going to be easy.

Terrified, I stealthily walked to the office to pick up my schedule for the rest of grade 10. Knowing that the first day is never easy, I reassured myself that I would eventually make friends.

While in the office, I was introduced to the Principal and a young lady by the name of Sarah. Sarah was appointed my tour guided for the next couple of days while I adjusted to the new school. Excitingly, Sarah introduced me to all of my new teachers, and explained to me how the social ladder works here at Summerdale Heights High School.

"You are either popular or not. Once you are classified one or the either, you are labeled within those two groups," explained Sarah

"Okay I think I understand. So if you are said to be popular then you could also be a jock?"I questioned

"Exactly. Look you already figured the entire school out," Sarah joked

"Okay so just by looking at you, I'm guess that you are a popular girl jock?" I responded.

"Well, I actually don't really know what I am and for that reason I could care less." Sarah quickly answered.

Sarah walked me to my first class, leaving me all alone once the second bell rang. My first class was math, with a teacher named Ms. Harding. Math, was going to be a breeze, as it was one of my stronger subjects. Back in New York my math class was just beginning algebra, and just by chance so was my new class.

"Everyone, please listen up. I would like to introduce Kate. She just moved her from New York and I would all love for you to make her feel welcome. Kate you can take a seat next to Kelly in the back," Ms. Harding explained

"Thank you!" I replied.

My first class began and ended smoothly. Now I just hoped that my next three would too.

Break was interesting because Sarah introduced me to many people. They were all very unique and different, because they almost all seemed to be from a different group. I tried remembering all their names but I just couldn't. There was too many to remember. Although Sarah told me that she didn't care what she was classified as, it seemed to me that she was pretty popular because she seemed to know everyone in school.

Science was an experience. Sitting next to some guy who smelt like fish was awful. Surprised by how smart he was, I thought all class about how to let him know he needed a bath. I didn't want to sound rude, or to make it seem like I was smelling him all class, but he had the right to know. When class was over I planned to tell him.

"Tommy, I hate to say this, and I'm trying my best not to sound rude, but do you know that you smell like dead fish?"I asked.

"Ya, I do. Our house has had plumbing issues and I haven't been able to shower for three days. It's getting fixed today. No worries I will smell good next class," Tommy explained.

"I'm sorry. No hard feelings?" I wondered.

"No, none at all. See you around!" Tommy replied.

During lunch, I sat with Sarah and a group of her friends. They were all really nice and they seemed to enjoy my company. We already made plans for this weekend to go to the mall. I promised myself I would make an effort to make friends and by lunch, I already had.

The class that I had been dreading all day, finally arrived. It was french. I had heard a few rumors that in order to earn an A, you have to get onto the teachers good side right away. My plan was to listen and try my best at every question. Because that's all I need was to get on her bad side.

"Bonjour. Madame. Je'mapplle Kate," I introduced myself in french to try and impress her.

"Bonjour, bravo, Mademoiselle. Welcome to french class. Why don't you take a seat in the back corner," Mme. Drake said.

I walked to the back of the class, were I took a seat next to a shy girl.

"Hi my name is Kate. Whats yours?" I asked

"My name is Madison," she replied in a quiet voice.

French class finished slowly. I knew everything believe it or not. I was happy with myself because it seemed that Mme.Drake really liked me. I knew I would be able to get onto her good side, but it would take a little effort.

My final class of the day was P.E. and I couldn't wait. Sports, seem to come naturally to me. I had been waiting to here when the try outs for the school sport teams were.I got changed and walked into the gym. The shinny floors and the walls covered in championship flags, was a sight I loved to see. My P.E. teacher, Mr. White seemed to like me. I made sure I brought my P.E. strip, along with my runners to show off my skills. We played soccer on the field after completing a warm up run. P.E. was awesome and a perfect way to end the first day of school.

Tomorrow will be less nervracking and more enjoyable. A weight has been lifted off my back now that I know how to survive the first day in a new school. I closed the door behind me as I walked out with a smile on my face.
